Description

This is the upgraded/finished version of my build here: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/b/YvwV3C

UPGRADES:

  • I got the g4560 for the same price as my g4400 and it seems to be performing quite a bit better. It's a great budget option and seems to be a good match for my RX 470.
  • I also got the Cryorig m9 because I wanted a cheap, good looking CPU cooler and this was the only one I could find that did both these things. I think It looks great and really helps to make my pc look more like a high end one.
  • I decided to get 12GB of RAM because I had already bought a 4GB stick and wanted to be able to play some forza horizon 3 on this PC
  • I also got the sleeved extensions I wanted for the 24-pin, 8-pin PCIe and 8-pin EPS cables and they look awesome. The EPS cable doesn't quite match the others but its not very noticeable so I'm not too bothered by it.
  • Also got an RGB LED strip for my case that can be controlled with the button on it. It was only about £8 and makes my build look better IMO.

I killed my Mobo and PSU with a faulty fan splitter off amazon so they had to be replaced but they don't pay out for whats broken so I had to shell out another £55 for a motherboard. It was the cheapest compatible one I could find and just so happens to have an M.2 port so if I want I could get a cheap m.2 ssd (something like an intel 600p or maybe a sandisk one). Thankfully they accepted my return for the PSU so that saved me about £30.

This is probably it for now. Might see what Zen does to shake up intel's pricing but I'm not too bothered really as I won't need another upgrade for a while hopefully. Might want a fan splitter though because I'm not running any chassis fans at the minute.

Part Reviews

CPU

Awesome CPU for the money. Good for most 1080p gaming and only £50!

CPU Cooler

Nice looking, quiet CPU cooler. My g4560 is always at about 50 degrees Celsius so it seems ok but the fan speed is at like 3rpm.

Motherboard

Cheapest motherboard I could find. Nice it has an m.2 slot.

Memory

RAM is RAM. It works fine.

Budget build!

Yeah. I saw that the new baby lake Pentiums had hyper threading so decided to pick one up. I was considering a used i3 for £70 but this is a way better deal.

Nice build, but one question, how does the rx 470 go with the vga monitor?

Cheap HDMI adapter off Amazon. Cost like £3 and works fine. I can find a link if you're interested.

Thanks! I found a nice cheap IPS monitor that sadly, only had VGA ports. I never thought to use an adapter lol.

Lol. I didn't realise until I bought my monitor but an adapter was my first thought :)

Should have bought a display port adapter so you can take advantage of much higher refresh rate than HDMI is capable of

But it's a 60hz monitor and it's handy having a vga-hdmi adapter around as it's more widely used. I might end up switching monitor to one with hdmi and a few extra features but it does its job for now

Did you need to update your bios to use this CPU?

aprofile
  • 7 years 11 months ago

Yeah. My original build had a skylake pentium g4400 so I updated the bios before I bought/installed the CPU. Some boards come with the updated BIOS and you can get it updated at some tech stores for some money I think. This board will out of the box only support skylake chips without a BIOS update.

How do you kill a power supply with another piece of hardware? Normally it’s not possible PSU’s usually kill themselves by blowing up or not working depending on how reliable your power supply is

Not exactly sure. Think there was some sort of short circuit

Skyrim, forza horizon 3, tf2, portal, skyrim remastered, the crew and assassin's creed unity. All play at 1080p ultra 60fps apart from forza which runs at medium at 30fps locked but I haven't really tried pushing the settings much

Great value but it depends on what GPU you want. I would pair it with a 1050ti or rx470 for the best balanced system. Could work ok with a 1060 or rx480 but you might see some bottlenecking there. I used to use a g4400 with no hyper threading but this is way better than that. If your budget can fit it and you are playing at higher resolutions than 1080p, I would get an i5. Probably a 7500. Be careful with motherboard comparability because you might need a mate with a skylake chip to update its bios.

Dying!?

I hope OP isn't. I think OP only meant that he or she is going to wait to upgrade for a while. Plus that headache of replacing parts can be costly and requires more time.

This is probably it for now. Might see what Zen does to shake up intel's pricing but I'm not too bothered really as I won't need another upgrade for a while hopefully. Might want a fan splitter though because I'm not running any chassis fans at the minute.

I think it was a joke, could be wrong though . . .

It's a 50/50 chance. Oh wait a second... when it comes to Jipster than it's most likely is. Though I normally don't see such a comment appear so sincere. I could be misinterpreting because a bunch of text on a post is not exactly my expertise for reading "tone."
