The R9 285 is more powerful than a GTX 960.

No, the R9 285 isn't. In practical Benchmarks the two are basically neck and neck to the point that you might as well roll a dice to see which one performs better on which game.

In every benchmark except one the r9 285 beats the gtx 960 (Within the margin of error so it's up-to the op is it worth the extra 1-2 frames), to say it doesn't is an outright lie.

Even in the link you gave they said that it's pretty much a tossup between the two.

Two higher, one lower, one exactly the same... though if it listed Passmark scores it would look like an outright stomp for the 960, but to be fair, beyond stroking the e-peen, synthetic benchmarks are pretty much meaningless.

Basically, it isn't an issue of "which is the better card" as much as it is "which is the better sale" ;)

if you bothered to read my whole comment you would realise I said the same thing. To add to this, you kinda answered why vagabond chose the r9 285, it performs basically the same and is cheaper, therefore the better choice.

Why an AMD processor?

They're really not up to snuff with the latest intel.
