I recently built a new pc and when i started play games like overwatch i notice i was only getting between 60-90 fps even on low settings and saw that my cpu was running at 100%. That overwatch and discord was taking alot up. Is there any thing i could do to help improve it and get more fps in my game?

Go to the disk manager and check your settings and see what's running whats not because it happens when your device runs a lot of things in the background. If you see a lot of programs there then go and make a deep clean virus search because as you said that you play games so while installing pirates game our PC installs viruses also which operates the programs from the background. This will definitely help you.

it is quite possible to max an i5-8600K or 9600K at high refresh rates if the games are already CPU-heavy. its the entire reason I switched to an i7. BF1 would max my CPU in multiplayer nearly all the time. i suggest making sure its not something besides your game(s) that are causing the CPU to be maxed out. if it is your games, then perhaps overclock it more (if possible) or consider either frame-capping it lower or upgrading to a better CPU. that all said, it is also quite possible that it is simply another program or a virus that is the issue. windows defender itself can be using resources when it shouldn't be.

Overwatch shouldn't be struggling that much on a i5 9600k when one of my Pentiums G3258 @ 4ghz ran overwatch between 50-65 fps.

I'm pretty sure it's either windows defender, windows update, some ****** virus or other program running in the background.

yeah, no, overwatch shouldn't have any issues on a 9600K... unless it hasnt been overclocked? but yeah.

Gilroar 1 Build 1 point 6 days ago

Even if it hasn't been overclocked Overwatch only hits two cores hard so it would never show a 100% usage on a 6-core CPU you would cap out the two main threads and have lower usage on the other four.

bucketofcrud12 4 Builds 1 point 6 days ago

ah, so yeah. background programs this time.

Gilroar 1 Build 1 point 6 days ago

That has to be something hiding in the background using up as many resources as it can to get a clean 100%.

I would update your virus checker and run a sweep.

Because you cheaped out and bought an i5 in 2019...

This isn't helping, and OP's setup should easily run things at much frames. And that i5 is store more than fine for today's usage. If OP is only gaming, then there is no reason for he/she to get something with more than 6 cores.
