Getting IT Certifications (i.e. MCSA, MCSE, MCP or any other applicable Certs)

Recently got denied a promotion for someone who had more experience/certification in the field even though they didn't work for the company I work for. I want to know if anybody has any of these certifications, how much recertifying is and how that goes. as well as if you think it's worth it to go for it or if I should try to grind for my degree(s) I was previously going to school for and not worry about certifications?

EDIT: I have around 100 CH left for my dual major in comp science/CIS if that factors into your recommendations.
