Given the current market, what single GPU solution would you use for 3440x1440 gaming?

Since my r9 290 crapped out and I don't think I can RMA it I might be looking at upgrading to a higher tier GPU and monitor setup. A 980 ti would be cool, but it looks like a 980 or 390x would do just fine for only $400 (I'd do open box, refurb, or b-stock EVGA for the 980. Though a 980 ti for $570 at this option does seem tempting.)

390x might be a pretty nice option since there are some freesync capable 3440x1440 options - I haven't thought of that. Fury or fury x might be interesting too, though there are only triple fan air cooled furys so I'd be limited by my case (280mm) if I get a new one like I'd like to, and I'd rather not spend $650 for a GPU solution, let alone the price premium for a freesync monitor.

I'm also interested in the correct possible answer to this as I'm considering getting an Acer Predator monitor. I was thinking maybe a 390x to save some cash? or is 980ti the lone true winner here?
