Description

I decided about 5 or 6 months ago that I needed to upgrade my PC, and after a bit of checking around I decided to go for a whole new build because most of the parts of my old alienware prebuilt needed replacing anyway. I learned a lot about PC building over those months and when my 21st birthday rolled around this last week I was finally ready and had enough to buy the parts just in time for Skylake.

The build went well, having no stock cooler meant I didn't bother fiddling around the the kraken outside of the case and just went straight to building. The build took about half a day, I started when my SSD arrived in the early evening and was up until about 1 or 2 am getting it all to work. The radiator would not sit nicely on the white I/O shroud on the motherboard so sadly that had to go take its frosty whiteness with it and leaving my build mostly blue and black rather than while blue and black. I tried fitting the radiator with the fans above it in pull but again thiswas problematic as it didn't fit nicely with the rear exhaust fan. I had intended to use the 140mm corsair fan at the back but too much got hidden by the rad so I put the 120mm fan there and made the 140mm just about fit in the bottom of the case. Other than radiator troubles the build went great and I even got to take part in the I/O shield blood ritual! Cable management went really well, much easier than I had hoped, had my brother to help as he does rigging for TV cameras as part of his job so knew all about it.

All in all I'm really pleased with it, it boots rally fast and the screen looks GORGEOUS, my old screen looks choppy at 60hz and the colours don't look nearly as good. I have ordered a white LED strip which might take a while to get here so I'll update with pics when it does, I think it will really make it look nice inside the case, I'm tempted to get some blue sleeved cables as well since the white blue and black colour scheme isn't quite as noticeable as I'd like but I'm going to wait for the LED strip first. Installing games and programs at the moment and will try OCing the GPU and CPU tomorrow. Let me know what you think!

they "no know limits?" Ah ha, so that's why they're frowned upon as "No no's"

sorry to necro the thread. couldn't resist

+2 (If I could). One for having a freaking epic build, and one for being the first member to post a Skylake build. How was working with the case?

  • 2 points

The case is fantastic! Really nice to work with and apart from the massive Kraken radiator every component had plenty of room to build in.

One of the first Skylake builds I've seen. How's the new platform treating ya?

It's great! runs much smoother than my old i7 920, going to hold off on OCing it until a bit more data comes out because people have reported crazy overclocks but I don't know how stable/safe it is to do that right now.

Nice upgrade! I'm looking to go from a 930 to a 6700K here in the next few months. Have you tried directly comparing the new vs. the old?

Does the asus z170 a motherboard you're using have a brown pcbs?

You're right, it's a black (silvery around the cpu) pcb with silver heatsinks.

oh thank god. It was nearly going to buy it when i first saw it as a brown pcb. But now since you told me with was black I'm probably going to get it. Thank you very much :D.

Did you have any dead pixels ,back light bleed, or any other craziness with your acer-xb270bu ? if not whats the date of manufacture and where did you get it from ?

Please overclock we all want to know if we can get 5.0Ghz with an intel since the 4790k was so close but yet so far (Linkin Park reference)

I managed to get mine to 4.7 @1.33

Very nice! Does it make a lot of noise?

I'm building for my 21st at the end of the month however I don't think I'll pay the extra to get skylake if it hasn't reduced in price much - why did you decide to get it sooner? Also if you could please upload benchmarks that would be fab!

I just wanted to get it because it was cool and new and also the DDR4 memory means that if I do decide to upgrade later I can keep the ram, you might be better off going X99 but the 6700K probably beats it in single threaded performance.

Where did you manage to get a 6700K? I've checked Micro Center, Newegg, Amazon, and NCIX every day since the 5th and haven't seen any in stock.

Europe and Australia have a fair amount of stock as far as I know.

Your a REAL MAN for getting a cut on his first build! :P

Love the build man! Only thing I'd have done differently is get the ASUS Swift 27" G-Sync monitor if you're gonna game on it :)

I don't play twitch shooters so the IPS was more important to me than the response time (plus I'm pretty sure the difference between 5ms and 1ms is pretty negligible)

What software do you use to control your fan speeds?

Nice build, congratulations on first Skylake-base build! +1!

I'm working on the i5-6600k but I'm stock in a hazle...how is that Kraken performing? Is it a "Noisy Boy"? I still don't know if go Kraken or go H110i GTX with an s340 case.

(Once done I hope to see the Jipster comment on my overrated red/black build!)

  • 1 point

The Kraken is pretty quiet when not under load, I think the dual 140mm fans help it a bit there but it does become noticably louder when stress testing.

  • 1 point

hey did you try ocing it yet? if so how did it go

Congrats on being the very first member to do an Intel i7 6700K Skylake-based build!!!!

Im gonna do it very soon too! How was it?

How's the motherboard treating you? Did any of the overclocking? Besides the IO shroud, any other issues with the features? Do you feel the USB count is limiting? This is another mobo I'm thinking of buying! Hoping to accelerate my decisions soon now that the 6700Ks are showing up for US.

Got it at 4.6 atm, getting into low 80s when stress testing on Prime95 v26.6 so don't feel comfortable pushing it further, seems like I didn't get a great overclocker but 4.6 is still more than good enough for me.
