Description

Built to play Witcher 3 decently and the like : ) Upgrading from a 3570k / GTX 660 that served me well since 2012.

Part Reviews

CPU

Well reviewed and should last me a while hopefully. Regret not spending a bit more for the new 1151 boards I'm starting to see on sale, but oh well.

CPU Cooler

Highly recommend by Silent PC Review, that's all I needed to read.

Motherboard

Never did take advantage of the $30 rebate back in April/May. Good at $130, much better at $100. Again, some regret about now getting an 1151 board instead. But has nice color scheme, plenty of features, and many good reviews.

Memory

The prices just keeping dropping on these things. I may swap out for 16GB eventually.

Storage

Very, very fast. I got the ACHI instead of the NVME version, but the former isn't perceptibly slower the latter. I am limited in space, but don't plan on playing many games at once. Everything else is in the cloud or on a backup drive!

Video Card

Have to remember to use my rebate! A very nice card, much improved over its red/black predecessor (no window, so it doesn't bother me that it doesn't match mobo).

Case

Very happy with how solid and well thought-out/made this case is.

Power Supply

Another great deal - new, but lacking original packaging, from Amazon warehouse. Anxiously waiting months to complete build to see if it worked, but happily, it did. Invested in a PSU tester, but the cables were incompatible (always a good idea if getting non BNIB PSU's, though!)

Operating System

We'll see. I miss 7 already!

Read that the 970 100ME has max refresh rate of 60Hz. Is that true? I plan to get a 144 Hz monitor and game at 2560x1440. Would the card be able to reach 120- fps?

Couldn't say as it's not a a widely used card. Maybe if you got a second and went SLI? During my research though I saw the 980 more highly recommend for gaming at the resolution you are aiming for.

Have been thinking about buying this motherboard for my CPU upgrade (i7 4790k from an AMD Athlon II X4 760k) and have been interested in this one. Whats the audio like on this motherboard (any interference/loss)? Do you use a headset or speakers?

I've used both and while I'm no audiophile, I'm happy with the onboard audio performance.

if you check your cpu, it has the socket lga1550 on it. That means it isnt compatible with lga1551. just to let you know.

Over all, it looks really good! :DD
