My dad sent me a picture of a box he had in his garage storage closet. It had the Apple computer Inc logo on it. He asked me to come pick it up and some other "odds and ends".
Well this box contained an old Apple II plus used in a hospital for about 5 years. My dad said "Oh yeah. I forgot to mail that back in 1984 and it was packed away." After looking over the packing, 1984 is not the year this was picked up by dad, but the year it was shipped to the hospital. Just guessing late 80's he picked it up and forgot to ship it back.
Awesome finding this jewel. It has 1979, and 1978 on a few spots. Edit It's definitely from 1982 not 1979. Dad's stories of when he and the hospitals used these were in the late 70's through the mid 80's. Apparently they were used as well as the IIe designs until they switched to more expensize IBMs. (Wish we still had the his old IBM with a 20MB hdd.)
I got it home and began trying to get it to boot. I'd only gotten a mixed screen of characters and a speaker check as if 10/27/19. Btw the game photos are from borrowing parts from the Apple IIe and reinstalling the known good disk drive. It ran the game as well as an old as dirt Apple PC will.
Note: it didn't run long and as of Monday afternoon 10/28/19 I no longer get video output. Again I'll look into it further on the weekend.
It took a lot less messing around with the Apple IIe to get it to cooperate. My hope's are dwindling, but I'll get the main board out and examine it next weekend. I'll also try removing the addon cards to see it I can get a screen post.
11/8/19: after removing and reinstalling chips, I have the garbled mess again. Hey, at least it has video output of something. So I'm back at the start. I think I damaged the old thing moving it home, removing and swapping parts etc. I am not swapping the IIe parts again. Too scared to fry them. This is no longer a "completed build" in my book. It's a failed PC at this point. My apologies to all.
So, for any curious souls that are interested in a personal computer circa mid/late 1982, I present a slightly rotten little slice of Apple II plus.
PS I apologize in advance for not being able to upvote anything. I no longer have that priviledge, but will add my "Thumbs up"
