Primarily used for video and photo editing, I couldn't help but throw in a beefy graphics card for some games on the side. For the most part I didn't have any issues with this build. It fired up first try. I've been super pleased with the performance! Not to mention it looks gorgeous. Except for the M.2 jutting out like a bone, or the cable management mess in the back (see pictures). It's a total rat's nest back there in this case! I hope it doesn't start a fire, haha.

Some notes about this build.

-RAM is stable at 3200 with a timing of 16,16,16,36.
CPU is stable at 4ghz This is accomplished using the D.O.C.P profile (Asus/AMD XMP equivalent). I wish I knew more about overclocking so that I could overclock the RAM to 3200 manually, and use AMDs Precision Boost Overdrive for the CPU so that it stays dynamic. But every time I switch to 3200 manually in the BIOS it crashes. This is primarily because I have no idea what I'm doing.

-The CPU stays around 28C at idle and hits about 52-55C under load with all cores at 100%.

-GPU has not broken 72c yet. I only game in 4K. I've only gamed with Metro 2033 (169fps), Battlefield V (60+fps) and a heavily modded Skyrim (60+fps), No need for a water block for the GPU as of yet. But maybe more demanding games in the future will beg otherwise? If so, I will turn to EK and get their new 2080 Phoenix GPU block.

-Asus x399 Rog Strix: This is an EATX motherboard. Although EATX fits fine in this case, its length makes it impossible to mount the EK-MLC 360 radiator upright on the side. It's a perfect fit up top though. So close to the top heatshield that it actually touches it. Also, an ATX would have been much more aesthetic in this case, but there are not a whole lot of ATX motherboard to choose from when going X399. Also, I hate the vertical M.2 slot. It looks ridiculous. Why can't it just be a regular M.2?? Thanks Asus.

Corsair Vengeance Pro: Gorgeous RAM and runs stable at 3200. Well worth the money. I've read that its Samsung B-die, despite it timed at 16,18,18,36.

Agreed! Been thinking of ways to mask them. But since I've got them I feel like I need to invest in a water block for the GPU now, otherwise they are all for not..

The motherboard has a horizontal m.2 port under the big RGB heat spreader in the lower right corner. From their website: "ROG Strix X399-E Gaming motherboards are equipped with an M.2 heatsink integrated into the PCH heatsink. The vertical mount was probably just an afterthought. I don't really like that style either, seems like they will snap right off. Just remove the 3 screws hold that heatsink down and you will be able to insert the m.2 drive.

Samsung M.2 is hiding under the heat shield. But yeah, the vertical definitely feels like an afterthought. The motherboard actually comes with a standoff/brace to support the vertical M.2, but it looked even worse so I removed it. I just hope to goodness I don't bump the vertical M.2 now and snap it off.

YES! That's exactly what I need. And $32 is not bad at all. I searched M.2 extension cables to move it elsewhere but they cost a fortune ($70-$90). I think that PCIe adapter would be perfect for now. Do you know if it effects the speed of the drive at all?

If I didn't get this board on a Black Friday sale I would have gone with a different one for sure.

I apologize I didn't research the specific item with regards to whether or not it would work with your build. I meant for it just to be an example of the type of item that you could buy.
Looking at the description in more detail it mentions to obtain NVMe speeds it requires intel i9 and certain board chipsets. It does not mention threadripper. That could mean one of two things. Either the product was produced pre threadripper and will work or it's not compatible with it for NVMe at all. With regards to your build and this specific product, as far as I know the drive will work. The only thing I don't know is if you would get the NVMe speeds or Sata 3 from it.
With that said I did notice something when looking at the Silverstone ECM23(similar type product). It gives the same information for supported platforms I9 & certain board chipsets on newegg. The funny thing is though if you go to the Silverstone page they give you info about the cooling capabilities of the heatsink vs one with out it. The test system they used for this is a threadripper 1920x build. This makes me think that you will get the NVMe speeds and the product was produced prior to threadripper explaining why only intel is mentioned in the product description, but I would recommend you do further research before buying any of them.

Thanks for pointing this out! I figured you were simply pointing me in the right direction so I went and searched out all the similar options available as well. There seems to be quite a few options in regards to PCIe 4X and NVMe compatibility, both very affordable $10-$20 range and some higher priced ones going for $60. I wasn't able to find compatibility specifics on most of them like you were, so I ended up taking a risk and pulling the trigger on a $16 Chinese one with a heatsink that was the most discrete I could find. I'll run some CrystalDiskmark tests on it when I get it in 4 weeks (haha) and post some results, if it even boots. Thanks usscac40!

If you are looking to up the ante even beyond the stratospheric heights you have already obtained, they make m.2 to pcie adapters. They generally only work right if your motherboard supports biforcation of the pcie slot(s). Asus discontinued theirs and the other 4xm.2 cards aren't well reviewed on Newegg, but maybe one of the 2xm.2 cards would be fun to play with (and get you away from the vertical mount). I think your chip will support up to 8xm.2 in raid 0 hahahhahhhah. Deb8ur did a video on it about a year ago.

By getting a little creative. Both of the SSD mounts are actually screwed together. Then I mounted them down to the bottom of the case with a single screw strategically placed in a threaded hole found towards the front of the chassis.
