Description

$689.34 after tax. All parts purchased from Amazon for convenience even though they may have been slightly more affordable elsewhere (but not much, plus free 2-day shipping made up for the difference and then some).

This is meant to be a future proof home NAS with potential for converting it to a light HTPC or Media server. Will update with comments after it is built. Only concern is the stock CPU cooler as it is the only one that fits in this STX form factor (so far).

Edit 1: Seems like the Noctuna NH L9i CPU cooler will fit and is way better than the stock cooler (obviously).

Edit 2: Pictures! and some comments...The Noctuna NH L9i CPU cooler is way quieter and fits nicely. Glad I made the change from the stock CPU cooler.

Overall, this thing is overkill for a NAS but doubles well as a Steam-Link/Shield using Moonlight for gaming in the living room. Also, the minimal power consumption is a plus for my always-on personal file server accessible anywhere through VPN.

If anyone builds this with the intention of gaming directly from it (I'm streaming to it, flawlessly BTW), I would highly recommend a high-end CPU with better graphics. The G4560 is not bad, but not the greatest for gaming. I tried playing some Gamecube ROMs with Dolphin and it works fairly well but definitely lacking (could be the emulator though). Again, it could be the emulator. If you really want to make it a gaming rig, just skip on the M.2 drive and hook up a GPU using a riser.

p.s. this is the "W" not the "M" version which means it comes with the Bluetooth and wifi. The Bluetooth is nice, but the wifi is not really necessary (not for me at least).

Looks good, glad you went with the Noctua :)

was 4tb storage really necessary? My main rig only has a 1tb hhd and 120gb ssd. Otherwise, great build!

+1

Thanks. Believe it or not, I wanted more. Is it necessary? probably not. However, it's nice to have one private central location for everything! I can access it all from any device inside and outside of my network (securely). Thanks again.

Storage depends of person to person. SOme may have enough with 120GB and some don't have enough with 16TB.

Hey thanks. It really is a a great cooler. Performs way better and is quieter than the stock CPU cooler. I had to wait a couple of days for it since I found out it would fit after I had already ordered my parts. So after using the stock cooler for a couple of days the difference was striking.
