Linux system for software development.
How well does that Dark Rock Pro handle your 3970X? I have a friend who is looking to build a system with that processor, but he'd like to avoid using liquid cooling.
You don't need liquid cooling. Currently, the best Threadripper air cooler is Thermalright SilverArrow TR4.
You can then swap Silver Arrow's noisy TY-143 2500 RPM stock fan with two NF-A15 HS-PWM fans.
It’s working well for me so far, idle temps in the 40s and 60-70C under load. Although AIDA64’s system stability test with all CPU and memory features enabled does exceed 90C. I’m using the Thermal Grizzly Carbonaut pad instead of thermal paste which probably keeps the temps a bit higher too.
Very interesting combination, R9 Nano and TR 3970X. I would be interested in hearing the reason behind that.
Probably only needed a dedicated GPU to run multiple monitors and minor other stuff, already had that card and didn't need too much GPU power on the software work they're working with, but it's very CPU intensive software development or it plans to be.
Yup just needed a GPU for initial setup and had the R9 Nano laying around unused.
Thumbs up for 32 cores. Enjoy!
holy shiz some using a r9 nano ive always wanted to have one for the longest time
A no heatsink ECC build with an R9 Nano on PCPP??!? Function over form, very nice choices.
