Description

First build post, but second gaming PC i built in 4 years. Upgrading from my old PC which had a Cooler Master 922 HAF case, i5 2500k, and Gigabyte Windforce 2GB GTX 760. My old PC had plenty of power for all my gaming needs, but the noise levels of the fans were starting to get to me. So Black Friday rolls around and I decided now would be a decent time to build a new PC.

The build took about 3 hours. A good majority on the cable management and I still want to tidy up the back more, but for now it's fine. Took out the drive bays to have better airflow along with a cleaner look. Mounted my 3TB HDD on the 5.25 drive bay, right below my Blu-Ray burner. On the back of the board I Velcro strapped my SSD to minimize the cables in the front. I got the non-window version of the Fractal Design R4, which I regret since my build came out so clean, but I am planning on ordering a Window Panel later on. Really glad I got the white LED's for the radiator, thought it really matched the tone of my PC and illuminated a lot of my parts.

Overall really happy with the looks and noise of my build, and was a fun project to do on the side. This will last me a good while before I even consider upgrading again. Great for gaming and really love the clean simple look of it.

Update 10/04/16 Updated the PC since I first built it 2 years ago. Mostly only the looks, and GPU Upgrade. Was considering SLI, but upgrading the GTX 970 to 1070 gave a noticeable improvement compared to SLI GTX 970's. Also made the jump to Ultrawide.

List up upgrades : EVGA GTX 1070 ACX 3.0 Window Panel Fractal Define R4 Cablemods RGB LED Strip 500GB SSD EVO 850 Samsung 34" Curved Ultrawide 3440x1440 VA Panel Monitor @60Hz

Thanks!!! I was actually really surprised on how it came out. My last build look like a disaster compared to this one lol.

I think it would be even quieter to put the h100i in the front and put exhaust fans on the top with the moduvent foam. But I love how it looks!

Thank you for the reply and suggestion!!! But wouldn't the moduvent foam be blocking air from exhausting?

I was thinking of putting the h100i in the front but the case fans were kind of loud, so I was thinking it would be quieter in the front instead of it whirling on the top. Also I prefer the looks of the h100i on the top =)

it doesnt block air from exhausting but it does reduce airflow (not by much) and i have seen builds with the h100i in the front of that case and it looks much nicer in my opinion, because the tubing isnt bunched up by the cpu

A smart build, no overkill on parts. Nice clean assembly and cable management. I like it.

There are so many people, that say they need an i7 (or whatever unnecessary upgrade) for a gaming only machine "just because."

I like how there's 12 of the same picture :p

In all seriousness, really nice job on the cable management. Clean build!

What did you use to mount the drives on the optical drives?

I bought this bracket mount from Amazon.

The prices jumped from the last time I bought it though.

How did you get a h100i for 50 bucks???? D:

My friend works at Newegg and gave me some amazing prices on some of my parts. I think the h100i is the best deal out of my whole build =)

dang man, you got some great deals on these parts.

Thanks!!! A lot of my parts were bought with coupons, promo codes, or just insane hookups from my friend from Newegg. Got my CPU+Mobo+Graphic card from Tiger Direct, bought them all separately using promo codes on each order. And the rest were mainly bought from Newegg on Cyber Monday with the Visa Checkout code. The forums on Slickdeals.net helped me a lot also.

That is one beautiful part selection, +1.

Could you recomend the R4 over a H440? And would the extra money for a 980 benefit for you? Thanks in advance...

I don't think you can go wrong with either case. I like both but the R4 has a cleaner look IMO. The H440 is really nice, but I'm not sure if you can take out the drive bays like the R4 can. Personally the extra money from the 980 can be better spent on other parts, such as another GTX 970. But if you don't want to SLI and have the extra cash then 980 is fine. But the best bang for your buck IMO would be the GTX 970 and R9 290X. Hoped that helped =)

is your intake at the top? if not how are your cpu temps under load? im curious about how well the cooler works while having warm air pulled through it

Hey, this build looks really good! I was wondering about your cooling. Do you feel like you have enough air coming into the case via the front two fans? How does that work with the three exhaust fans? I'm looking to build a VERY similar PC as this (same case, same cooler, same hard drive bay removal, same cpu) and am just wondering how airflow is.

Air flow is great, but it's also not the best. My previous PC was very optimized for high air flow and was averaging slightly better FPS. But honestly that rig sound like a 747 getting ready for take off lol. I much rather sacrifice a little performance for a quiet rig.

Overall the air flow is really good for how quiet this thing is. Only thing I really regret is not getting a window case. Would have been nice to look inside of this beast once in a while =).

Just make sure to clean out the dust filters and have enough fans exhausting the air out. Even when over clocking it stays pretty cool. You can also add in a bottom fan if you like, but not sure how much that'll benefit since I haven't done that. Also getting the right types of fans are pretty important to optimizing air flow. Hope that helps =)
