Description

Featured Build?!?! Again! Wow this is such an honor. TY PcPartPicker! Chloe will be happy to see her desk on the home page!

See Chloe and I install the build here: https://youtu.be/hKcLs6L4aeg

After helping me build our first PC, my daughter started playing some games. Her current favorites are "Slime Rancher" on Steam and "Diablo 3" on Blizzard. As such she has been trying to butt myself or my girlfriend off our computers more often. I decided to kill many many birds with one stone and came up with a plan. I convinced her she needed to build her own PC if she wanted to play whenever. I'm totally ok with her having as much PC as she wants IF!shes has done her homework and chores.

We began looking on youtube for cool mods and ideas. She was a little intimidated from helping me with the water loop but I wanted to recapture her interest. Like most gamers, she cares more about playing the game then building the PC, and that's fine... I'm still making her build it. I found what really caught her eye were the PCs built into desks. I told her I would build the desk and she just had to put in the parts, easy right? She liked the idea of having the PC under lit glass. We also like that she has lots of space on the desk for homework. She agreed to put in the work, I agreed to add a little pink to the build, and we set out on our mission.

The shape itself is designed to be thin like an actual drawer. This way a younger gamer doesn't have to have a big gap between there resting wrist position and their knees. This seems like a small issue to go to such lengths over but trust me, for a little kid this matters. Most desk PCs are super thick like a real PC. So I worked off a 3.25" form factor. This meant a sideways mounted card with a ribbon was in order. I also wanted the whole chassis to pull out so you didn't have to clear the desk every time you wanted to open it. That posed some challenges as well but we figured that out.

All and all there is a lot more I could say and I will be adding to this bio. I used wood not metal only because personally I have much more experience with it. There are a lot of things I wish I did differently, but it's wasn't gong to be perfect AND be unique so I kept moving with the design I had. Right now I just wanna post these pictures and begin my edit on the video of the build (coming soon) as well as play some games with my kid!

I named it Gipsy Danger as Pacific Rim is our absolute favorite film to watch together. I thought the story of Raleigh and Mako fit the build quite well and matched the "half brand new, half old school" looks. So I went blue when I could on some components. Chloe loved the theme so I've very happy. The lettering is from a car emblem web site.

NOTE* I did not included the cost of the parts outside of the usual PC components. 2 reasons: that would take a really long time to list each individual little bracket, nut or bolt i bought along these past two months, And also I've literally lost track of how much I have spent on odds and ends over many trips to the HW store.

I will tell you this though... the desk came as one item. That was $75. That was our starting point. Upgrading the hinges was about 30 and from there I've lost count. I'd guess about 300 all in with desk, hardware, wood, lights and all.

Some parts where salvaged. The home made bracket for the graphics card and the motherboard tray came from a friends old pc. I cut them to where I wanted with a dremel and painted them with many coats of spray on bed-liner for trucks so they wouldn't scratch easily.

Please ask questions, I know I didn't explain every little thing, So ask away.

Final thoughts... I think most desk PCs start as big awesome gaming PCs trying to become functional desks, and that's awesome. Ours is a little different. Ours is a desk that became a mid rage gaming PC with a thin form factor. I love how it still looks, feels and functions like actual furniture. This fits perfectly in our house... and I think I may be borrowing it, so I can tear open our other PC. the journey continues!

Yeah you kinda really deserve it... Plus I was getting tired of looking at custom liquid and dual ti's in every feature build lately... No offense to them just like originality over money spent

Beautiful. You are a wonderful dad. Made me choke up ... onions! ... if I could give this 100 likes I would. Wish all fathers were like that :) The lettering just finishes it off beautifully.

I wonder, if in 100 years these things will be sold in antique shops. Like we look at mechanical typewriters and Victorian desks today.

  • 4 points

I hope so. I think of them like 1950's hot rods. Slow by today's standards but still beautiful and well built.

Exactly my thoughts. This is an incredible build with real feels behind it, I can tell!

Awesome job, 1 million Kudos!

Thats one damn crazy pc and one damn lucky girl. I feel like the fan noise would be insane though, whats it like?

  • 1 point

actually with the fans at around 80% on those dials the loudest thing is the HDD!

I knew noise would be worse that close and under glass so I opted for good fans. Really payed off as it is pretty near silent. The one amd fan is a lil noisy but that can be turned way down, it's just for the drive area.

Nice choice of components! I also just paired the Sapphire 580 and Ryzen 1500x with a 29" 2560x1080p monitor and it's a great setup.

How is she liking the keyboard? I am looking into the same model but black

  • 1 point

We both love it. I have the full size in black. Make sure it's the z-88. there are a lot of similar ones but this one had solid reviews.

  • 1 point

Yeah I am looking into the model you have, I had a scissor switch gaming keyboard that broke and I may not be getting back from customer service for unknown reasons, so I'm looking into a keyboard that will not break as easily, the customizability of the switches on the z-88 is a huge plus for me.

I think only the full size has "per-key" lighting.

This is my dream right here , nice work , Im calling feature

  • 1 point

This is easily the coolest and most innovative PC I have seen. I like the custom work and think the attention to detail makes the difference. Can't wait to see the video on how this went down

  • 1 point

I hope this gets featured because this is some nice work dude, great job. I am glad people can find something they are so enthused about.

How is this not featured? Great choice of parts and a cool design! Why build a desktop when you can build a desk, am I right? :D

Honestly I'm a new builder and I'd like criticism. That's a good thing. You can do that nicely... right? That's what this space if for. What didn't you like?

  • 1 point

No, i didn't mean it that way.

They recently made a rule about no sexual jokes.... and then featured this build a day later. The title really tested my self restraint here.

Very nice work with the build, it looks great. You've done much the same as what I was planning on doing for my next personal build, except I was also planning on building the desk too

As I read it, you mentioned looking into water cooling. Would you do it in the future? What are your temps on this system? What was the hardest part of this build for you? The most tedious? Is there anything you would have done differently? thanks, and great build!

  • 1 point

I wish I had a desk like this... Very cool. +1.

  • 1 point

I think I will do the same (i.e. build your pc, dear) for my daughter when she gets there, very good idea! Your desk computer is awesome. I would have put the front fan inside for hazard/security reason, wouldn't change a bit of the rest. As perfect as it can be.

Wow!!! This is crazy awesome! Amazing custom job.

  • 1 point

that looks awesome

  • 1 point

that's gorgeous, and best of all it's inexpensive!

  • 1 point

Did you overclock it? I was just looking at details and noticed that it says 3.8 GHz and it is a Ryzen 5 1500X 3.6 GHz.

  • 1 point

So these chips are awesome. It whent to 3.8 automictlcly on start up. Turbo boost kicks in when it senses cooling is adequate I believe.

Great looking build and great that you did one together. My son and I did a basic build last year and my daughter and I will in a couple of years. I'm making them save up for most of the components themselves.

Turned out great

Diablo 3 though...?

We discussed how it's ok to kill zombies not people. She's a good kids so she gets violence isn't cool in real life. She rarely plays it anyway she just saw me playing one day and wanted to try. These days Slime Rancher is where it's at.

3.25" thick? Wow

  • 1 point

inside yes. That was the clearance to close it and open it.

  • 1 point

So just for size comparison the only thing slightly bigger than that desk would be a 5.25" expansion bay

  • 1 point

There is a 5.25" drive bay in the front for size comparison. That chamber it's in has lots of room, the PSU and lots of cables. The front panel is about 4"

Is there any bottle-necking with the CPU and GPU?

  • 1 point

Not much with ryzen 5. You will get a few more frames out of an intel but I wouldn't call it "bottle necking"

NOTE: We now run a 1070 mini in this rig. Works great for 2k around 100fps and 80fps when streaming,

MY APOLOGIES I listed the wrong PSU. We went for the 600w model so I can't say for sure about the 450.

Loving the AMD fan sticking out for the drives! How effective is it?

  • 1 point

I actually use a fan controller now and have it off most of the time. There is one behind the hard drives on the same side that dose the trick. People kept hitting their knees on it LOL

I only crank it during a stress test or heavy overclock session : P
