Description

My Zombie Hunter 4k gaming pc (with Delid cpu/Vertical gpu mods)

This is my build I put up 2 months ago. Since then I've been happily gaming on it and I delided the cpu because even with the 360mm cooler it was still running HOT!!! So I delided it and it is now to my liking.

I just purchased a Samsung 960 500gb m.2 ssd. It is not pictured because is was purchased post photos

Yes I know it is a K cpu and a non oc'ing motherboard because I started this build with a g4560 and didn't intend to upgrade. The 7700k wasnt much more money than the 7700 so I figured why not, it was faster and not much more. Also figured resell value, but the 4.2 stock and 4.4ghz turbo is worth it even for a non oc'er. It was running sometimes 80c+ and with this cooler it was unacceptable.

Vertical video card mod:

Vertical Graphics Card Holder by Ice Wolf - Cooler Master Store

EZDIY NEW PCI Express 16x Flexible Cable Card Extension Port Adapter High Speed Riser Card-25cm from Amazon

Also....I took apart my ti, re-thermaled the gpu with Grizzly Kryonaut and added green led's for the light effect

I play my games on my SamsungUN55KU6600 Curved 55-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV

Thank you

I was in the same situation. 7700k was just 20 dollars more expensive, so i go for it. The surprize is that my motherboard has auto overclock, and when the cpu is stressed, all core goes to 4,5 Ghz, only for that i m glad i chosed the k version (i have asrock B250m pro4, bundle at microcenter 40 dollars)

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 2 points 8 days ago

Exactly. I use my msi gaming app and keep it boosts to 4.5ghz while gaming. All reality what difference would I see with an oc to 4.8ghz and the cpu and computer would run hotter

TenTonnesofDoug 1 Build 1 point 8 days ago

And you never know, some nutter will sell on their nice 270Z board on the cheap , just because the 370Z came out... You've left open the thrifty upgrade path!

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 8 days ago

I remember your build!! I might of posted on it... Can't remember. I also have a phanteks evolv case on my other build

TenTonnesofDoug 1 Build 1 point 8 days ago

Sweet!

I think I might have to investigate this vertical GPU mount idea too, might be better for cooling. I've also been thinking that fabricating some kind of clear plastic square tunnel around the card with a 140mm fan at one end might be better at pushing air hot GPU air straight out of the back? A vertical holder might make this idea a little easier too? Has anyone seen anything like this done?

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 8 days ago

I don't think heat is an issue with the mount. I haven't really monitored the temps lately but from what I remember it was working around 65/70c gaming. Plus oddly enough the delid cpu cooled down my gpu temps in all my benchmark and stress tests too

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 8 days ago

Haha now you have me looking at mobos.... I just purchased a Samsung 960 evo 500gb m.2 ssd so that's my newest upgrade. Going to install that tonight with a fresh install. Maybe after that I'll get that itch and pony up for a new board... But I probably need an arctic MSI Z270 tomahawk to match my build

nmaciver 2 points 11 days ago

Love the build..but I hop that's not your mouse to game with!

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 2 points 11 days ago

Haha... Thank you but I'm a controller in the big chair kinda guy. I do love my trackball though

Sam_Flynn 1 Build 2 points 9 days ago

Nah dude, this build is something else. It shows the hours you spent

Fatroadcop 2 points 11 days ago

This is the most attractive thing I've ever seen in my life. This has a 99.99999943% chance of getting features as it should.

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 9 days ago

Thank you!! and it did :)

TenTonnesofDoug 1 Build 2 points 8 days ago

Nice build! It's not my taste, but you went for a theme and nailed it. Got to respect that.

Since posting my build (https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/b/fFZRsY) I've also de-lidded my 7700K (also using same Conductonaut / Kryonaut combo) and REALLY glad I did. Definitely worth doing - my temps dropped hugely, rarely gets > 50 degrees C at 5 GHz.

When I first opened the IHS, I even noticed two tiny parts of the die didn't even have TIM coverage, must have been bubbles in it or something. WTF Intel! If I hadn't have opened it up I'd have gone for years thinking I'd just been unlucky with the silicon lottery.

De-lidding enabled me to extend overclock range from 4.8 up to 5.2, and I recon 5.3 should be possible, but at expense of too much heat and degradation. I've left it running at a 5 as more performance just isn't necessary and not worth the extra voltage / heat (heat = noisy fan profiles).

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 8 days ago

Wow that it some huge numbers. And great cooling. Maybe later I might swap motherboards but it is running almost everything full blast 2160p. I will check out your build!!

JewishSantoo 1 point 11 days ago

HOLY ****, this is beautiful great job mr man

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 10 days ago

Thank you!!

Battlefield 1 point 11 days ago

Great build. Love to see so much customization and thought. But..gotta get a z270 and push that 7700k to 4.8GHz.

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 2 points 11 days ago

Thank you!!

I thought about it but it just runs so well stock with the 1080 ti right now and it is hard to find a game that I have to lower any settings on...right now. Plus not sure how much performance boost id see from 4.2ghz/4.5ghz max turbo to 4.8ghz ya know but maybe later when games get more demanding I'll reboard and oc

Battlefield 1 point 11 days ago

I hear that. But its just fun overclocking and pushing CPU to higher limits. It's like buying a Porsche and never going over 75mph.

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 11 days ago

Totally understand, and I use to crave that high... Now I'm more into trying to Keep my temps down while playing it at its max. My other pc is a hybrid 1080 and a 6700k on kraken x62 both at stock and both run 50c gaming

Battlefield 1 point 11 days ago

I'm learning that too. With i7s its best to then focus on quiet/cool. I have same case and 2 sets of Riing fans (set 1250rpm) so its great to see what someone else came up with. My next addition will be a custom cpu loop. To forever maintain low temps with quiet system.

TheAtlasAce 1 point 11 days ago

This looks absolutely awesome! The LEDs kind hurt my eyes even in the pictures but that's just me! Awesome build!

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 11 days ago

Thanks. Yeah, I actually keep the led kit off and the tempered glass has a nice tiny to damper the fan riing at night

Blacksm1le 1 Build 1 point 11 days ago

why this motherboard with K processor

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 2 points 10 days ago

It is in the description

Yes I know it is a K cpu and a non oc'ing motherboard because I started this build with a g4560 and didn't intend to upgrade. The 7700k wasnt much more money than the 7700 so I figured why not, it was faster and not much more. Also figured resell value, but the 4.2ghz stock and 4.5ghz turbo is worth it even for a non oc'er.

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 2 points 10 days ago

It was a decision between 7700 vs 7700k....3.6ghz vs 4.2ghz for $15 more at the time, no-brainer

LunarEclipse17 1 Build 1 point 10 days ago

what did you do to the cpu when you took the heat sink off i dont get that

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 10 days ago

The stock thermal on the core isn't the best and the cpu was running hot even with a 360mm cooler. Popping the lid and reapplying a liquid metal tim (Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut Thermal Grease Paste) cooled my cpu by 20c

ForsakenRei 1 point 9 days ago

Nice build! And I have to say you are really lucky to get the ice wolf GPU mount. I kept an eye on it for a long time but coolermaster website always said not available/not enough stock.

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 9 days ago

I have the page book marked myself and yes been out since July. I ordered another from EU store also and someone said they are out too

ForsakenRei 1 point 9 days ago

Me too but maybe I need more luck to get one lol

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 8 days ago

On the bottom left corner there is a chat button... Maybe hit them up and ask.

Spooky

Jasiula16 1 Build 1 point 9 days ago

Beautiful, so fun so beautiful i love it!

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 8 days ago

Thank you.. And fun is a great word for this build it use to be Fallout Vault 303 then I go the green fans and did a whole change up. It was fun to do

Splatterlord 1 point 9 days ago

You beheaded your CPU but didn't even overclock it?

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 9 days ago

Yeah I did. My 7700k was running around high 70c sometimes 80c while gaming with the 360mm cooler and grizzly tm. That's too hot. I have always been intrigued with delid so I figured I'd give it a try. It was fun and an experience I can say I successfully did.

I've become more obsessed with low temps then overclocking I guess.

He_162 2 points 8 days ago

I for some reason can't fathom you having temperature issues with a 360mm water cooler, It must be an airflow problem, or the pump isn't pumping the water very well, or possibly you haven't set the fans to reach maximum speed?

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 8 days ago

I run the fans max being I don't mind the slight hum and the tt fans are pretty quiet. But yes it was mind blowing to me too. But the delid worked tremendously

He_162 1 point 7 days ago

That chip is insane hot then, I'll be wary of this when testing the i7-8700k.

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 7 days ago

From what I have read the 7700k is known for running hot. They say that Intel messed up on there thermal on the core that's why people delid 7700k commonly. Most do it to oc more I did it to cool my system down. But yes the new Intel with more cores, higher frequency, more power = hot cpu and might all need water and/or a delid but that's just an assumption

Splatterlord 1 point 9 days ago

Man that sucks, better luck with your next CPU.

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 9 days ago

I figure, my pc runs great with the stock 7700k/1080ti and if I want to overclock in the future I can but... Probably won't. My other pc has a 6700k/1080 Hybrid and it's all stock too. Runs just fine (50c/50c) https://pcpartpicker.com/b/9npG3C

X47man 1 Build 1 point 8 days ago

Spooky +1

darkclow 1 Build 1 point 8 days ago

It look stunning, I always want to ask where is the air coming in from to the case? I always heard the temp for this case is horrible but it really look amazing.

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 8 days ago

The top air get blown through another cavity next to psu through some vents... Not the best of ideas but I think in win was thinking more of looks when they designed this case. Guess that's why they have options for 7 120mm fans

How much are the spooky pumpkins.

jenxoff 1 Build 1 point 7 days ago

Nice but with the 8700k out why did you go with the 7700k?

jenxoff 1 Build 1 point 7 days ago

Lol they're out of stock ALREADY

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 7 days ago

Haha... I've had this cpu. Plus where do you buy a 8700k right now? I think this cpu is strong enough. I wouldn't even upgrade right now. Do you have one?

jenxoff 1 Build 1 point 5 days ago

Na, I got an R5 1600. But on my old Mac, CS:GO even got 10fps very stuttery on lowest settings, so this is a major improvement to 180 fps on highest for me :)

DanielMDA 0 points 8 days ago

Just a question, why only 8GB of RAM? With that GPU 16GB should be ideal. Also no HDD? and SATA SSD? M.2 PCIe for all!!! (WD Blacks 3D NAND M.2 PCIe 256GB SSD is 119US right now)

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 8 days ago

I have 16gb of ram. You must of read wrong. I just as we speak installed the m.2 500gb and reinstall w10. I have 2 ssd drives also. The ocz and i just installed another 256gb SanDisk ssd... So about 1tb of ssd and I have 2 external 2tb drives a move around between computers

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 1 point 8 days ago

(WD Blacks 3D NAND M.2 PCIe 256GB SSD is 119US right now)

I up for the 500gb Samsung cost me $234 and it seemed to be the fastest. I saw wd 500gb for $200 but this one was rated faster

BrandonJanoski 1 Build -3 points 10 days ago

You got an unlocked processor but a non overclock able motherboard

customgtp submitter 14 Builds 6 points 10 days ago

Thank you for the information

surefir3 -3 points 8 days ago

50 up votes and I'll end my pain and suffering

Sam_Flynn 1 Build 2 points 8 days ago

surefir3 1 point 7 days ago
