Description

Functionally I wanted a build that was of a small form factor, allowing for easier transportation when going to a LAN but not at the expense of sacrificing cooling power when home and overclocking. This process needed to be simple and quick which is why I developed a quick disconnect system from S5 to the pedestal allowing me to separate the two with ease. Visually, I wanted to create as clean of a build as I could, allowing for all the special custom bits to shine through. The name "White Metropolis" started out because I was trying to brainstorm a name that wasn't cliché with a white build and chose it with no intention of including it in the build theme. That all changed when I got inspired by city silhouettes. In this build you will find the silhouettes of major cities all across the world such as Hong Kong - China, Bangkok - Thailand and Jakarta - Indonesia because of how they looked around the other components. I've hopefully succeeded in tying all these things together in a visually appealing, high detail design. My desire for windows all around led for designs that complement the computer no matter which side you look at it so no matter where you view it from you get a different and equally pleasing view.

Noooooooooo! D:

I saw your build on PCMR this morning. I knew you were going to take the featured build spot away from me.

Damn you and your amazing PC.

+1 for sure

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 18 points 30 months ago

LOL. I'm sorrrrrrrrry

skiskate10 1 Build 7 points 30 months ago

Seriously though, congrats on the build.

You got over 100 more upvotes than me :P

Ryoutarou97 2 points 30 months ago

Lol, you held it long enough. Black/white builds seem to be really popular these days for some reason. I blame that Asus x99 board.

ThatsPoorlyDrawn 3 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

It's okay, you still have an AMAZING build.

Xtrem04 1 Build 12 points 30 months ago

Holy Crap man that BRZ...oh the computer is nice too lol.

XxD34THxX 1 point 30 months ago

Yeah, any mods on the BRZ? Nice build

Meithen 2 Builds 11 points 30 months ago

Beautiful build, the mods look excellent and the loop looks flawless.

I love the SSD and the sleeving is great, a truly unique color theme also.

terthii 1 Build 9 points 30 months ago

Hello from /r/pcmasterrace!

Easily one of the nicest builds I've seen; this isn't just a computer, it's a work of art.

Gleiss 1 Build 6 points 30 months ago

By LAN you mean like a PC Mod show right? really nice CLWC colour scheme and build. +1

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

I wish, I don't know anything around me like that in Eastern US. Those shows seem to be in the West and I'm in the East. Just meant my friends house lol

Fears 2 points 30 months ago

Lucky Friend.

Harvey_TM 5 points 30 months ago

Great build, I like the colors and the loop. Also, that monitor setup is amazing man.

monkeybars 5 points 30 months ago

Perfect case lighting. So nice to see lights being used to actually light up a case, rather than be the focal point.

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

Yup, they are only as "accents" to compliment the build. Not shine colored light everywhere

MightyMango 4 points 30 months ago

It's so beautiful, the colors and how you formatted this build. Truly an inspiration that it's making me tear up some. Oh noes, I'm tearing up over a build? Sorry, excuse me... it's just beyond words with this modification. Thank you so much.

ToDefeatYou 1 Build 3 points 30 months ago

There's building your own PC then there's what you did. You went above and beyond what some people do to make their own custom PC. +1000000 to aesthetics. looks beautiful.

auldae 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

That is the nicest build I have ever seen and seems to be built at a decent price. Awesome job. If that v in pic four (gratuitous glamour shot) was a S4, I'd make another account to double up my +1.

How do you like the Steelseries headset? I am thinking about getting a HyperX Cloud 2, but want to also think about other items!

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

I like the Steelseries although I've been getting some flak about them, idk, they are good enough for gaming to me at least, i used others for music

Manusia 2 points 30 months ago

I think that you mean Jakarta... fantastic build, one of the best I've ever seen, makes me envious.

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Oops, thank you

Did it just happen that I saw and loved the OCN thread for this a couple of days after it's creation and immediately loved it? Awesome build, and I hope we see more Caselabs builds in the future.

PS, I wish I was smart enough to make a modular pedestal! :)

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Thanks for checking it out on OCN! That's where I learned everything

izodmartin 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

Pure Artwork!

ped90 2 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

Sorry to put a downer on it - it looks great, but aren't the components (you know, the bits that really matter) a bit weak? Or was performance not really key? Considering the images showing the use of 'pro' software, I would have thought it would be? Whether it is key or not, you could have chosen better hardware for the same money... Nice work with the aesthetics though. Very original.

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

4790k is quite good. GPU for the money spent is defintely a little off from the rest but thats ONLY because I plan to change it but did not want to wait until the new round of NVIDIA or 300 series AMD cards come out who knows when. I figured putting the whole build on hold vs just upgrading the GPU later was better to just do the latter. I get your point though. Oh and maybe a bigger SSD.

ped90 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Yeah, nothing wrong with your CPU. Fair enough about GPU. I think you would have benefitted with more/faster RAM. 16GB is not that much for editing with. Also the Samsung 850 is way better than 840 and about the same price. Not sure what your hard drive arrangements are (I imagine SSD for boot/programs. 1TB for common secondary storage and the 2TB for archive?) but maybe get one more SSD for caching. Will help you no-end in Adobe software. But still, it's a nice job!

Tooth 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

I don't think he cares about the negative comment about the insides

One of the best builds here

Rashiq 2 points 30 months ago

Got any build Log bro? You know this deserves one... ha ha lol +1.

Rashiq 1 point 30 months ago

Those are some serious toys you got there. (Laser cutter!!.... REALLYYY :-Q ) Maybe you have some cnc machine mill you forgot to pic (´゚o゚`)?? LOL

Is that a subaru brz in the background?

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Yessir

the_master_jt 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

Nice car, i prefer the wrx sti (that's my favorite car) but still awesome.

Mullen 2 points 30 months ago

This is by far the best build I've ever seen

Mullen 2 points 30 months ago

I have a question, how long did all of this take to build with all the custom stuff?

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 23 months ago

140+ hours. First time through though, if I did it again it would be a little less

coolguy562 2 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

Wow. This is what I aspire to someday be able to do. This is probably the single most beautiful build I've ever seen. I can only imagine the amount of time spent on the etching and paint jobs. Wow.

Ikashy 2 points 30 months ago

This build has to be one of my favorites of all time (aside from mine obviously, but that's just sentimental value).

Also, I thought it was pretty crazy we have the EXACT same Storage setup.

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Glad I'm a favorite!

HTTPRO 3 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

Siiiiiiickkkkk buiiiilld!!!!! Question tho, how are the headphones doing yah? I'm looking to purchase one this weekend.

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Which headphones? The Siberia or AT M50x

HTTPRO 3 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

The Siberia one, its still on sale for $30 and I was wondering if the performance is good for the price?

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

If it's a Siberia V2 for $30 I say get it!!

HTTPRO 3 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

It's a Siberia Raw Prism for $30 and the V2 is $40. So which one should I get?

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

I'm not familiar with the raw. I can say $40 is worth it for Siberia, unsure about raw

bad_eyes 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

HOLY s**t that is crazy setup i really like the silhouette of the city background and how clean it came out.. good job

nikitaluger 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

The looks of this build is so soothing. I will be taking pointers on your build log for my future build. A really sweet build guitarhero23 and I hope you get to somehow get back what you spent on this build because you deserve it and I hope to see more of your build.

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

Thank you my friend, it was a fun project.

UsVersusThem 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

Holy fvck that's sexy.

beLIEve 2 points 30 months ago

my girlfriend sent this to me after seeing it on imgur i was surprised i didn't see it on here first. +1

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

I love the viralness of that!

ManNamedMatt 2 points 30 months ago

By far my favorite build on this website. The colors, the form factor, the actual components, it all just works. And I love the original name as well! :)

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Thank you thank you

priddymab 2 points 30 months ago

Not sure if I'm blind but what monitor mount are you using? Looking for a 3-4 mount with either 2 on the bottom and 1 on top of 3 and 1.

Slashbeast8 2 points 30 months ago

Very nice, I'm hoping for a build with a similar color scheme. I have some questions though, where do you find all of that custom **** or do you make it yourself? Also, did you design and etch in the silhouettes yourself? All in all looks really slick and purtty. :O

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Which custom elements specifically? The GPU Backplate, Midplate, PSU, SSD, HDD, I all designed and made myself.

AlchemistZero 2 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

0_0 wow

z_man_200 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

Simply incredible. There are good modded builds, and then there is this level. I've only seen maybe 2 other custom builds in my admittedly limited experience that even come close to this level of creativity, design, and originality. Bravo, sir, bravo! Absolutely love it.

Wardmanhd 2 points 30 months ago

Nice BRZ man

A0S 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

Wouldn't expect to care for the color theme, but that is one classy build. +1

Pericles757 2 points 30 months ago

....I never thought a machine could look so good! lol What video editing software do you have running up there?

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Adobe Premiere Pro CC

MichaelOhBeast 2 points 30 months ago

Just WOW! Man good job, i like the whole white theme

It's gone :(

xolot1 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

This is truly inspirational. Thank you for sharing your talents with us!

ArrKayCee 3 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

This is beyond PC, this is art! I can honestly say that I haven't been so impressed by a build since Jay made Skunkworks, and even then I think this surpasses that. Sure, you don't have three way Titan X's or a 5960x at 4.7GHz, but damn, that is one beautiful build.

Bumblescrum 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

Did you mill the SSD cover yourself? How does it stick on? I would love to have something like that but don't even know where to start. I would love any advice you have on what you did there.

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

The SSD cover is just vinyl covering on the SSD then I printed the design on photo paper and glued it

Bumblescrum 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

That's clever, and a lot more simple than what I had assumed you did. Thanks for the info.

mhanson101 5 Builds 2 points 30 months ago

This is one of the most impressive builds I've ever seen. Love the color scheme and the organization is flawless! This is what I will be aspiring to. Did you do the laser cutting yourself or have it done?

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Thank you. I designed the pieces and worked with a guy for the cutting. I was there when it happened though. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdU_uM0-96A

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

You're right but I'm not too concerned as it won't be TOO much of a difference. Will get something else for next time.

How is the Asus motherboard? I am thinking about getting it with my i5 4690k. Did you do a BIOS update and is it hard? Also, are there any disadvantages you notice?

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 29 months ago

I like it mostly because of the Armor. I did have to do BIOS flashback. Wasn't very hard to be honest. I've never done anything like that before either.

MooshroomForest 1 Build 1 point 29 months ago

Okay thanks. I just bought the motherboard and am looking to overclock on it with my i5 4690k.

Tannakin_Skywalker 2 points 25 months ago

About two years ago i stepped away from the console scene and got a mid range gaming laptop. Ever since then I've attempted to look at gaming on consoles and all i see is inferiority. My older brother lives out of town and recently built his first desktop. Now that "itch to create" has gotten to me as well. I'm now on the verge of building my first high end gaming PC. Ever since i stumbled across this site that itch has become stronger and stronger. The piece of technological art found here is a true inspiration. I can only imagine how much fun it was to build. I truly hope that one day I can create something as beautiful as this. Superb job GH!

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 2 points 25 months ago

GentlemanShark 1 Build 2 points 23 months ago

How is the compatibility of the EKWB water block with the armor kit?

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 23 months ago

No issues at all, but if you use a monoblock for the whole MOBO that might cause issues. If it's just the CPU block like here you won't see an issue

GentlemanShark 1 Build 2 points 23 months ago

Great, thinking about using mine, but they sent me the wrong one so I'm waiting on an RMA.

370z! handles just as nice but faster!

Rywen 2 points 14 months ago

Yeah I've heard it's faster lol, and a better drift car as well. But in my area a rich old guy is selling a 1971 Datsun 240z with ~4,000 miles on it and even has the bloody thing souped up and boosted. Though it's such a nice car I'd be afraid to own it lol

vordar 1 Build 1 point 30 months ago

I thought I saw Hong Kong in there! Nice build, really!! I know there's a lot of custom work put in to this and I noticed the paracord in your parts list, so I have to ask, how was the sleeving? My hardware came in the other day and I'm looking to try and start sleeving myself in a week or so after the rest of those materials show up. I'm actually look to do a similar color selection, except with a slightly darker blue and a touch of black. What sort of combs did you end up using? I know Lutro0 has some stuff (though sold out), but I can't seem to find anything similar to try and use. I know there are other methods of binding the cables together, but nothing else has me sold at the moment.

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

I bought my cables from ensourced.net and he puts his 3D printed cable wraps on them. They can be a little brittle (broke one) but the quality of cables is top notch. All the other cables I sleeved myself but the PSU ones can be hard to do.

vordar 1 Build 2 points 30 months ago

I figured I was in for 1-2 weeks of mind numbing tortue, but I'm really trying to make this build my own. I don't have the time or resources to do anything too different, but I still want to make it as clean as possible while I look at simple little mods. I'll take a look after work and see what's there, thanks.

ThatsPoorlyDrawn 3 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Not a fan of the blue color personally, but it works VERY well in this build. Amazing build.

ICAnderson 1 point 30 months ago

This is a really amazing build...that being said...if I were you I would've put two 970's in it rather than one, if you can afford it. While a 970 can power four displays, the performance in some games most likely lacks performance because of aforementioned single card performance. Great build otherwise! I envy you!!

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 30 months ago

Agreed but I prefer a single card to SLI, and I didn't want to wait until the new round of cards (980 TI, 390x) came out so I did this with the intent of it being my first part to upgrade.

ICAnderson 1 point 30 months ago

Ahh...that seems like a really solid plan...keep up the great builds!!!!!

alexkizirian 1 point 29 months ago

This desktop build looks simply amazing. The white and blue design looks great! This has inspired me to build myself a gaming rig rather than buy a pre-built one. This is my first time building a rig so if it isn't too much trouble, id love to hear your opinion. My build has a few similarities: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/alexkizirian/saved/#view=BYLxFT

Thank you so much and amazing build! Hopefully mine ends up working similar to yours!

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 2 points 28 months ago

Nice! Couple questions:

1: Is their a reason you're getting a network card? Why not use the Ethernet port on the motherboard or is something else at play here I'm missing?

2: What's the color scheme going to be? I ask because if it's white and blue I'd suggest doing a little mod work to paint those RAM sticks because the red will stand out like a sore thumb.

3: I see you only have a 250GB SSD listed as storage. Do you have an existing HDD you're going to use? 250GB will run out quickly.

alexkizirian 1 point 28 months ago

Thank you so much for your reply.

This is where my inexperience shows itself. I was under the impression that I needed a network card whether it's wired or wireless to gain access to the internet. I didn't realize that the motherboard is all that's needed along with an ethernet cord to connect to the internet. Great! One less part to worry about.

Ya I was hoping to go with a blue or black and white color scheme. I wonder if the RAM i'm looking at comes in gray as well but I haven't looked hard enough. I have never though about painting the RAM but can't think of why it wouldn't be a good idea.

So I already have a 250 SSD3 drive and a 750gb SATA 7200rpm drive sitting around from my laptop that just fryed.

Thank you so much for your input. I have noticed that you have purchased case fans. Do you think i need to do this for my case? I am also unsure what cables I should buy. Thanks again!

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 28 months ago

Laptop drives and Desktop drives (harddrives) are not the same. You would need some type of converter or something to use it but you're better off just getting a 3.5" standard desktop one...

It depends how many fans your case comes with. It might come with some so you'd be fine, if it doesn't you might need a couple so you can pull cold air in, and send warm air out. What cables do you mean?

alexkizirian 1 point 28 months ago

Gotcha. The particular case that I am looking at is the Cooler Master Storm Stryker (White) ATX Full Tower Case. That is a very good point haha. It looks like I would have to cough up more cash. Hopefully, I can at least get my SSD3 256GB drive in a converter.

The cables I was talking about were ones thay connect the motherboard to the powersupply but after reading a bit, I realized that the cables come with the powersupply purchase. The other cables I was talking about are ones that connect to the optional fans on cases. I believe that those are also included in most cases. I think they are in mine.

What would your recommendation be on storage? Do you like to go the 128GB SSD with a SATA 7200rpm 1 TB or 2TB or do you go straight for a 512 GB SSD or a 1TB SSD? I know that the second option is more expensive but am wondering if the SSDs are also much more durable as well as fast. Does it matter for gaming to have one's games on a SATA drive vs an SSD?

guitarhero23 submitter 2 Builds 1 point 28 months ago

Put your games on a HDD. They take up like 80 GB's. They would load faster on an SSD but you would fill it up so quick. Go get yourself a 1 or 2 TB Western Digital drive, like the blue series ones. Use the SSD just for the operating system for boot and some programs.
