The Sentinel (Matrix Inspired Custom Case with Pi Zero)

by Sentinel3.14

Description

Thank you so much for the feature PCPP! This has been a dream of mine for very long and I though it would never be possible just a few years ago when I got into tech! I am blown away by the attention in the comments. Thank you all. This is such a great community and site! I've been on here for a few years at this point and it has been such a great tool in my (admittedly very short, pretty much since I was 12 and got into tech from Linus's HDD failure video on NCIX) career!

This machine will be used mainly for video/photo editing and gaming (and of course general computing). Will also be used to run VR. It is based on the sentinels (weird robo-squiddy thingies) in The Matrix (one of my favorite movies).

As you can hopefully see, the case is totally custom. The base is wood and the shell is fiberglass-sandwiched chicken-wire. There is also a Raspberry Pi Zero mounted in the front with an 8-channel relay to control my custom led circuits and strips. More details to come : )

I originally conceived this idea over a year ago and slowly worked it over in my head until we started a few months ago. This was a nice father-son project; I bought and designed mostly everything but needed my dad's carpentry and general expertise for fabrication. In case you're curious, I'm 15.

Pre-Planning After my plans were finalized in my head, I made a rough SketchUp model with components to scale to get measurements for the wood mockup. My dad helped with all the woodwork and we ended up with the first draft per-say. After some small modifications for better io access and a paint job, Boom! V2!

Case (ish) The chicken-wire frame was built on the wood base and around a stand-in wood gpu. We then coated it in fiberglass strips. The window is a glass water bottle cut lengthwise by our glass artist friend. The big front eyes are lenses from broken projectors from my school (I work in the Tech Dept.) The tiny eyes are marbles I ordered on Amazon. All accents around the eyes and face as well as the claws are made of lead flashing. Hopefully no one gets stabbed by the lead spikes... ; )

Installation For base V2 we added some tiny wood blocks to act as stand-off extensions to give clearance for the custom extensions I got from Ensourced.net. I ended up just hammering in the standoffs because the wood was not being very nice to me. : | I stuck on the ssd with some double-sided foam tape and we mounted the hard drive with some bolts my dad found in the garage. The gpu is mounted on top for tonnes of airflow using an ugly flexible riser card that I spray painted.

Raspberry Pi stuffs I made a custom power adapter out of two female pin cables soldered to a chopped off micro-usb end to power the Pi Zero from the mobo usb headers. Also made an adapter for powering the leds by chopping a molex connector out of an old pc. The 12v power from molex from the psu is distributed through the 8 channel relay controlled by the pi. There are 3 circuits I soldered together out of some loose leds and 3 cheap strips from Amazon. On one of the relays are jumpers going to the vandal switch on the front so I can remote power on/off my pc from anywhere. (All pi stuff mentioned so far is entirely my idea and I'm pretty sure never been done before at least in this way. Lemme know of any others.)

I use a static ip for the pi, portforwarding on my router, and a free ddns hostname service so I can send commands on my phone from anywhere. I use Juice SSH and the Tasker plugin for integration with another plugin for Tasker linked to the fingerprint scanner.

What all this results in is that I can hold my finger on the back of my G5, a menu pops up with graphical options. If I hit the power icon it goes through Tasker then Juice then my hostname to my router to the pi which runs my Python program that controls the gpio to trigger the relay to short the power pins to start/shutoff my PC! (I'm pretty proud of that there. : ) I also have some programs just to do fun patterns with the leds.

Other things worth(?) mentioning I found an animated screensaver on the interwebz while looking for a wallpaper. I used shadowplay to do a screen cap of the screensaver then used that as my wallpaper with Wallpaper Engine on Steam.

I killed my first Pi zero. It was working fine for a few days until it left this earth and took my wifi adapter and sd card with it. : ( I imagine it was due to my incredibly awful soldering job.

I wrapped the ugly wooden desk in some carbon fiber vinyl from Amazon. Looks very nice imo.

I haven't had any issues with the riser card after I replaced the first one I got. This first one looked much better and was slightly longer so the curve was nicer but it turns out it had some corrosion I only found after the refund period was up. Eh.

Any comments or input welcome and appreciated!!! Thanks for checkin' out my project of passion!

which pill gets me this again?

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 32 points 17 months ago

This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.

Damn this looks unique! You pulled it off nicely and it looks truly like a gutted and re-purposed sentinel in the dark!

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 3 points 17 months ago

Thanks! Never really thought of it that way. It's cool how another point of view can reveal something to you. I showed the second picture(my favorite) to a friend at school and he was like "Oh cool with the blue and red pills!" I was blown away at that idea as I just did it because I like that contrast it provided.

I_Need_Big_Drink 2 Builds 0 points 17 months ago

When I first saw the Matrix series as a kid the image of those stuck with me as they were pretty scary. Very recognizable!

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Yeah I remember seeing it for the first time at my grand-parents house when I was like 8. They scared me then but I loved the movie.

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 3 points 17 months ago

Haha thanks! 'Twas. I don't really have the money to do anything more... : ( I did have a thought a few weeks ago that If I eventually need a NAS or server, I would make the Nebuchadnezzar (Morpheus's ship) complete with the plaque from the movie. I would probably make it in "that case with those four bulbous rgb fans on top" (I thought it was deepcool tessaract but now I can't find it).

Lol, I do have a good job(tech dept. at my school) but it's just not good pay and very low hours. And I also have loving parents, they just didn't buy it for me. I bought this myself but had to take much out of my car savings account. oops!

Awesome unique build. Just out of interest did you set up the pi zero switching off the power button using the relay or just directly? I was considering doing a very similar thing a while back but exams suck so I kind of gave up on it. Loving the wall mounted monitor btw. Looks really clean.

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Thanks for the comment. I used the pi connected through the relay because it (the relay) was already in there for the lights and I didn't want to have to figure out how to make/break connections through the pi. I think it's possible? I'm not a complete noob but I'm fairly new to pi stuff. I agree exams suck. Just don't study! I also love the monitor. I got a real crappy usb powered red led strip to run off the usb on the back of the monitor so that when the monitor is on its back-lit.

aprofile 3 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

Nice. I think the voltages might not be right for the pi to handle directly but I didn't really get to look into it too much. My exams (GCSEs) are in 2 days so I kinda need to study. Anyway your setup looks awesome!

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Oh congratulations! I know controlling the 12v lights is too much but methinks the pi could handle the tiny signal voltage. Eh, who knows. You should try it after your exams!

aprofile 3 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

Yeah. Probably worth having a look because I have a 10 week holiday and a pi 2 anyway :)

monkeyman987 1 point 17 months ago

very cool build, the design is completely unique. I'm most impressed with the pi zero concept though

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Thanks! I actually came up with the pi idea way before the sentinel idea. I got it from a pc guy on Instagram (so sad I can't remember the name) but he was putting an arduino in just to run a tiny display - pretty much like the Bitfenix Pandora(?). I have no experience with arduino other than 8th grade robotics class so I thought it would be cool to have a pi in there. Then all the other ideas just naturally developed!

Slappy 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

AnimeGamer 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

IM CALLING A FEATURE , This is one of the coolest builds I have ever seen ! btw whats your cable mangement secret?

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Thank you so much! Ah, good planning? Running the 24-pin and molex to sata cables under the mobo with the makeshift standoffs helped quite a bit. Other than that I just try to keep things tight. I'm really no expert but if you have any questions about specific areas I'll upload more pictures. Interesting thing related to cable management, I have a 6-way mounted to basically the backboard of the desk, right in front of my knees. I put in a big 'ol 2.4amp iPad charger to make up for the distance and ran an extension usb cable and micro-usb up through the inside of the desk to the top of the left upper draw to charge vive controllers, phone, headset, whatever. It's pretty cool.

AnimeGamer 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Thanks , Can I ask how you got the monitor to look cordless

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

We ran all the cables through the wall. You can see my dad trying to holesaw with an old manual drill after the regular drill died in pic 37. He actually couldn't get through but after he left I took the saw and just pushed through the wall. Another hole is behind the desk. The monitor is also on a wall mount so it's really cool.

AnimeGamer 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

I have aempty closed behind the wall my PC is agianst so I am going to try to run my cables through the wall , that is if me contract allous it

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

That's a great idea! A pretty good option if wall damage is not allowed would be to just tape some paper or fabric the same color as your wall over the cable.

AnimeGamer 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

I WAS RIGHT , IT DID GET FEATURED

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Thank you very much! My parents were actually going through the comments before I could (because homework...ugh) and after my Dad read this my Mom was pretty much sighing: awwwe. It made me proud. Thank you.

E_Hos 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Sick build! Grats on the feature.

...benchmarks? How's the graphics card and that monitor doing together, possible option for my setup :)

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Thank you very much!

I don't want to do any real benchmarks because ya know, everything changes by the settings you want, the framerate you want, the optimization of the game, etc. What I will say is that it performs well at medium to high settings in most modern AAA titles. I definitely don't feel very bottlenecked, but don't expect to be crushin everything at ultra. For real benchmarks I would suggest either Wideasfcuk on YT or any regular 1070 benchmarks its gonna be between 1440p and 4k.

What is the name of the program you used to virtually design the pc in images 13 and 14? Extremely unique build btw it looks great!

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 2 points 17 months ago

SketchUp! It's a great beginner 3-D modelling program. Super basic but easy to use. It also has a model library I got most of the components from. I talked a bit about it in Pre-planning Funny thing to notice: there was no strix gpu model so i found an evga model in the "warehouse", scaled it to strix size, and stuck a image over the top so it looks almost like a strix card.

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Wow, thank you very much! I would have liked to do a custom loop for the cpu, just so I could have a larger rad and run it behind the desk, but money... This was, in the loosest sense of the word, a budget build; I don't really have much of a job as I'm in high school and work for my school's tech dept. but only get paid in the summer. Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

I was trying to find something witty to say but I have failed. I love the way he says Mr. Anderson though. I also have some agent Smith sunglasses, they're pretty cool.

OMGriffinz 2 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

I know a teacher called Mr. Anderson, whenever I see him I always think about the way Agent Smith addresses him...

I'd love those sunglasses, I bet they look slick whilst driving around.

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Lol that's a great name to have! They probably do look cool, though I wouldn't know as I can't drive yet.

floridaboz 4 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

this is simply amazing.

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 2 points 17 months ago

Why thank you.

ZackKoutaRoxas 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Holy crap this is unreal! (No pun intended? Pun intended). Rock on, man!

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Welcome to the desert of the real. lol thanks

drogo 1 point 17 months ago

Where's the Spoon? Also did you choose watercooling because you couldn't fit a heat sink/ case fans?

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth. . . . There is no spoon. Yup pretty much. I could have fit a low profile in there but I didn't really want to make that compromise. The other benefit with having this external radiator is that all the cpu heat is drawn out of the case, which is very good because there is basically no airflow. All internal airflow (for the drives and ram and such) comes from the gpu. The gpu fans take in fresh air and exhaust into the case (another problem if I had a cpu heatsink).

drogo 1 point 17 months ago

Yeah, you might be able to fit a push fan in the back and cut a few vent holes on the side to cool it down. Thanks for responding to everyones comments!

drogo 1 point 17 months ago

Also why did you get LED ram if it's hidden?

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

There's not really room in the back to place a fan (other than a like 20mil). The only thing that is worrisome is my 950 Pro saying 57C in Corsair link. Maybe I'll try having my gpu fans always on low. . Oh and no problem! I love all the comments!

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 14 months ago

OOOh! I am just going through my old comments for fun and I saw yours. I have a LEVITATING SPOOON !!! My friend got my a magnetic levitation device for my birthday a while back and I spent a lot of time mounting a bent spoon onto the base so it levitates and spins about an inch off the table. I'll try to upload a pic of it.

drogo 1 point 13 months ago

What if I told you there was no such thing as "the spoon"?

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 14 months ago

Pic #3 shows my current setup with addition of rgb desk backlighting, poster, and SPOON. Pic #4 is spoon.

JheyoDELperu 1 point 17 months ago

im just gonna grab some popcorn..some soda, and read all this ... then.. the photos... and then, the coments... gonna be great day... and hey.. you the architect of this madness... congrats..looks amazing.

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 2 points 17 months ago

Thank you very much. Hope I didn't let down your hopes!

TheBlackPython 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

this is amazing! this build is so uniqe and it looks like you put a lot of work in. and the stuff your doing with the Pi sounds awesome!

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Thanks! Yeah, it was a lot of work, but it was very fun and totally worth it.

ThatOne11YearOld 1 point 17 months ago

SETUP WARS. NOW. +1337

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

lol. I did think of it a bit before I was done but had pretty much lost confidence until I put it on here and got featured and all of these wonderful comments. Hey, maybe you'll see me there soon and you'll be able to say, "I called it!"

legendscar1 1 point 17 months ago

what is the program that you used to build the concept of your pc ?

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 2 points 17 months ago

SketchUp. It's a very basic but easy to use 3D modeling program. You can hear a bit about how I used it in the Pre-Planning paragraph.

StarBlazer457 1 point 17 months ago

How's your wallet? If it was mine, then it's below zero... Lol, jokes aside.... Nice build! +1

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 2 points 17 months ago

lol. this mostly came outta the car fund, which I'm gonna need in a few months. oops! I'll definitely sacrifice a bit on the car though to have this "dope *** pc" ~ some other commenter.

StarBlazer457 1 point 17 months ago

Haha, lol. Man, I can't wait to get mine built..... gonna be another couple years though.... that's alot of yards to mow.

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Haha! Yup! Luckily I have the opportunity to do IT work every once in a while so that's better than mowing.

StarBlazer457 1 point 17 months ago

Yeah, but I don't really mind. I mow my churches yard once a week and make $25, just for 30 minutes and just sitting on the mower. I have about $200 dollars or so..... and I need $1300-1500!!! Lol, hope you enjoy your masterpiece. Oh BTW, where'd you get your background??? Looks freaking awesome!

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Wow, that's a pretty good dealio. You haven't even seen the best part of my wallpaper!!!! I mentioned a bit about my wallpaper in the first paragraph of the other things worth mentioning section. It's a screensaver called Matrix_ks (just google it). I used nvidea shadowplay to screencap the screensaver and used wallpaper engine to make the video into a looping wallpaper.

Creeper12345698 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

This puts my fully custom water cooling loop to shame... Great Job, I've been inspired!

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 2 points 17 months ago

Lol. I wanted to do custom but money is an issue...

StarBlazer457 1 point 17 months ago

Spends nearly $3000

and money is an issue??????

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

yeah... I don't have a real job and couldn't justify spending 300+ on mostly just cool factor. : (

StarBlazer457 1 point 17 months ago

Lol, I see...

kingori 1 point 17 months ago

You did it!

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 2 points 17 months ago

Yippee!

yellojello 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

I'm afraid to ask what kind of security feature that has? Laser through your hull or ripped apart by the claws? Why not both?

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

I considered putting a webcam in one of the eyes or a laser coming out the bottom like the hull ripping scene.

ProAustinR 1 point 17 months ago

I was lost for words when this popped up. I have never seen ANYTHING like this and you did an OUTSTANDING JOB!!!

You deserved the feature for the effort you put into this!!

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Haha thank you very much.

toastythomas 5 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

I feel like teens (myself included) always make the best builds.

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

Do you remember me telling you about this concept on your build?

toastythomas 5 Builds 1 point 17 months ago

OMG I DIDN'T MAKE THE CONNECTION.

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 17 months ago

lol

ImperiousBattlestar 1 point 15 months ago

Damn, this is just awesome. There is no other way to describe this. +1. :)

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 15 months ago

Oh hey, Thanks!

Specter-Builds 1 point 15 months ago

Could you put a link to the carbon fiber wrap you used? I think it looks really nice! +1

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 14 months ago

Oh man sorry, didn't see this! Here ya go! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FXYAQW0/

Specter-Builds 1 point 14 months ago

Thank you!

Nater650 1 point 13 months ago

Wow that is a very interesting PC

Nater650 1 point 13 months ago

+1 for improvising

VictorStagnetty 1 Build 1 point 13 months ago

I think Sentinel3.14 took both pills. How cool/hot does it run since the case is so custom'd, no ventilation problems? Very cool setup, not just the case. Have you/can you play with the colors? Get the "green" matrix them going everywhere else and have those red eyes going.(OMG THE LIGHTS ARE SO BRIGHT THEY BURN MY EYES) There are some cool matrix themes for that corsair keyboard you have. Would look sweet with the live wallpaper i would think. I have the same keyboard and became very problematic after 97 days of use. I would hit keys and they would just repeat 3-6 times, very annoying.

plzDonateAgame 1 point 13 months ago

This is the greatest PC case and setup I have ever seen. I can't begin to express how much respect I have for you after putting so much effort into this. Also..... I know Kung Fu

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 2 points 13 months ago

Thank you so much!

eligantwraith 1 point 11 months ago

the matrix was a good documentary ...

johnyboy102 1 point 6 months ago

I like the foot in one of the last pics the most. lol

Nice Job

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 6 months ago

Oh thanks! I think that's the only pic of me in this whole thing. : )

msolfest 1 point 6 months ago

Holy smokes +1

Twizzey 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

THE SPOON! <3

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 4 months ago

By now it's been mounted flush into the table. Looks epic af.

rogdog56 1 point 4 months ago

does the void have good audio quality?

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 3 months ago

Very. My HyperX Cloud 1s before these suffered from em interference (probably from components near the cable inside) and cable noise. These have no such issues and its an all around fairly even sound profile. The mic quality is not great though. Passable, but bad.

Silent_Gunner 1 point 4 months ago

What if I told you that these machines were powered by the latest gaming hardware money could buy in the early 21st century?

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 3 months ago

The computer body uses more bioelectricity than a 120-volt battery and over 2,000 B.T.U.'s of body heat per hour.

rogdog56 1 point 2 months ago

I really want to put a pi 0 in my PC. Not as any functionality for the PC, but just so I can say I did it and also because I can have 2 computers in 1 itx system. Also because I'm crap at soldering so I would break many pi 0s, lol. Sorry for second comment, this is just so cool.

Sentinel3.14 submitter 1 Build 1 point 2 months ago

Haha! Just having it in there might inspire some future mod you can make for it. Good luck!
