This poor Dell E520 system was going to be thrown in the trash. It was my grandmothers system. It lived most of its life inside a closed in desk cabinet running warm with Windows XP and 50 icons named random things such as "New Folder (3)". It chugged along though. Every time I'd go over there I would do a quick msconfig / autoruns clean up to keep it going just a little longer. Well, it did its job. She used this system for YEARS, not once reinstalling Windows XP. She eventually wanted to upgrade, so this thing was retired. I offered to take it.
Things I added:
Core2Quad Q6600 -- 8GB DDR2-800 -- 1TB HD -- Card Reader -- Intel Pro/1000 Gigabit Nic -- Radeon HD 4830 -- XClio 500W PSU -- 90mm rear fan
It's now a living room PC (the desk it's sitting on is temporary), and compared to before it actually has some power in it now. Can easily handle dozens of tabs + Skyrim + a movie on the 2nd monitor. Prior to these upgrades, there wasn't even enough memory for more than a few tabs using a modern browser.
