Description

Work Hard - Play Hard - A mix of office/cad/code/gaming for a college student. I used two cans of spray paint (one black and one white) to make the stars on the side panel and the PSU cover, which was made out of a plastic sheet I bought for <$5 on ebay.

I also installed an NZXT HUE to add some color accents to the black and white. I was going for a universe/nebulae kind of aesthetic.

The name "StarForge" is a reference to the star wars game "Knights of the Old Republic" (one of my favorites).

The idle temperature varies a lot as I live in a desert with a wide delta in temperatures throughout the day. But on average, with an ambient room temperature of ~22C, I get 27C idle and ~45-55C under load depending on what you define as load of course.

As for noise, it is REALLY quiet. With the case fans turned up to max and under full load I can barely hear this thing. The card handles just about anything I throw at it. I get 60 fps on Far Cry 4 with max settings on 1440p and less than 60% of usage from the card. Fan on the card never goes over 50% and is inaudible as far as I can hear sitting ~1 meter from the system. In a dead silent room all I can hear is a low hum, according to an app on my phone... @ 1 meter : 18 dB, @ 0.3 meter : 23 dB

I don't know why manufacturers don't make move black and white motherboards.

Can I ask why youre commenting on every recent build with your tagline "Cool Beans." and that alone?

Because those builds were like lima beans I left in the freezer overnight. Cool beans.

Thanks! I actually have very little spray painting experience. I did that by just watching some youtube how-to videos. It was a lot of fun. I did a trial run on some cardboard a couple times before doing the actual panel.

You don't have your GPU listed... 970 or 980?

It's right there...Nvidia Geforce GTX 970 Reference Cooler.

Odd, that didn't show up for me the first time.

This particular 970 isn't available from most retailers for some reason. Newegg had/has it in a combo deal but not stand alone. I found it at bestbuy and I just had to have the reference cooler for its awesome design. The green glow didn't go with my system, so I had to take it apart and sand off the green paint so that the white LEDs would shine through. A little bit of work and some careful/steady hands required, but it is totally worth it for the final product. There are some good tutorials on youtube showing how to do this.

Might be another Best Buy exclusive, like the K65 RGB. Or Best Buy might have a deal with OCUK or something. OCUK, as expected, had the first custom NVTTM GTX 970. Anyways, love what you've done with the Geforce GTX logo. I first saw the technique on JailBreak's build and I'm glad you've decided to take the risk; it really does the Krait justice.

Love the build. I had that motherboard but i had to return it due to the sata ports blocking my 970 from seating into slot.

What is the reasoning for the water cooled non "K" CPU on a Z97 board? Looks fantastic though.

I got the cpu for a large discount through a friend. He was buying a new mobo and it was part of a combo deal with this i5-4690 CPU, so we split the combo cost. I don't need anything more powerful than this for my needs so it worked out fine. I had already bought the board though as I was planning on a different cpu. Just how things worked out. Also, in the future if I want to grab an i7-4790k when some new intel chips come out and prices go down on the 1150s, then that is an option too.

It works great so far! I have have yet to see my cpu go over 50 C while gaming (playing titles like Far Cry 4 on max settings). It is also very quiet. If I have headphones or speakers playing, I cannot hear the fans at all. Even with nothing playing they are still very quiet.
