Description

I wanted to try 4k gaming but my old gtx 560 couldn't handle it... so I decided to build this rig. And it works like a charm =) Gtx 1080 was an obvious choice but I couldn't get an interesting custom card because the worthy ones are too long for this case... I overclocked the 6600k to 4.5ghz but I can't really get more without changing my air cooler for a watercooling (70C during stress test and 60C during intense gaming).

For next year upgrades i'm considering watercooling for both CPU and GPU so that i can also OC the GPU (the witcher 3 @ 4k is not always smooth with hairworks ON). I'm not really considering a RAM upgrade since the difference between 2400mhz & faster RAM is not that important in game.

I've overclocked the gpu yesterday and here is a new benchmark http://www.3dmark.com/fs/9313342

No heat problem with a good fan control even with FE

I was tempted to get the Gigabyte 1080 FE but now I think I'll wait for AIB cards to be back in stock and go from there.

My thought exactly. I'm waiting for the EVGA Hydros

Damn, that cost :p I'm not quite sure what I'll go with yet. Probably the strix 1080 since I'm looking at the strix motherboard.

I got slightly the same rig than yours.

You made good choice about everything but I think G-Sync screen Is a must.

I'm waiting for the zotac 1080Ti amp Ext to enjoy witcher 3 with HairWork on in 4k :)

ahah you're right :) But 4k with gsync was out of my budget for now :/

A Zalman Z11 Plus to house that beast of a PC? Why?? :( that ruined it imo, but everything else seems nice, good cable management

I wouldn't say ruined, but much better choices exist

The case is one of the two parts (with one of the big HDD) that I kept from my previous build... At that time i liked the agressive design... Now I'm considering getting Corsair Graphite 780T or Corsair Air 540 Artic White... But I'm too lazy for this right now :p

+1 Would love to know if this beast gets 60 FPS at 4K! Even if it's not at max settings.

If you're open to suggestions on upgrading, definitely consider getting a G-sync monitor because that will smooth out the frame drops at 4K.

Yep in most games it's well above 60 fps (like in borderlands 2-3 and Rainbow 6 siege) The only game I have that makes it fall below 60 fps is the Witcher 3 with everything max and hairworks ON. But without hairworks it's OK. By the way you're totally right about a 4K G-sync monitor but it was much more expensive (i got this good 4k monitor for 400€ and 100€ cashback so total was around 300€) and considering I have only one game with frame drops I will wait for the 4K GSync prices to drop

You could've gotten a gsync monitor it's 24 inches 144 hz 16:9 ratio for 379$

Yep but it's not 4k (which is my number 1 requirement for enjoying fully witcher 3) :/ Gsync 4k is more like 700-800€

I mean, if i don't play 4k there is no need for gtx 1080

man may I know whats ur current voltage for a 4.5ghz?

1.28V if I remember well (not at home for now)

thanks man, if u have time to check, please let me know. I will try to compare to adjust my settings based on that

Sure, i'll check tonight. But not all 6600k will work with the same voltage, it's (like always with overclocking) lottery

yes im aware of dat. im currently running on 4.2 at 1.2v. I just want to have some basis where to start. probably ill try 4.4 at 1.25

I've just checked i confim it's currently set on 1.28V for 4.5Ghz

Noooo you should have gone for an offbrand card when they come out. RIP temps using a blower style cooler.

Otherwise its good, but as hardware does it nowadays, we cant run max settings on the newest titles on 4k resolution with just one 1080.

yep that's true about 4k for games like the witcher 3. But for older titles it's very smooth ^ In games like borderlands the pre sequel (2014 if i remember well) i'm above 110-120 fps in 4k. Even in the witcher 3 all max @4k it's ok since it's not a fps/online game and 45fps are enough to enjoy it. btw if I put a watercooling on my gtx i'll overclock it of course

Very nice! Good cable management! (much better than on mine lol). Like you commented on my build, ours are very similar, and a monitor like the one I have will help you getting over your last 4k hurdle. Mine is a 4k with gsync, and it runs Witcher 3 with everything cranked to max very smoothly.

Now I got lucky because I found a like new one on amazon, which cut over 200 off the price (which put it in the realm of at least somewhat reasonable). At its retail price? I can understand why you might be waiting for a bit before getting on board with that.

Yep your monitor is exactly what I would need :p Maybe that I'll sell mine next year and add a bit to get the same as yours
